Web Single Sign-On Authentication using SAML

Companies have increasingly turned to application service providers (ASPs) or Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors to offer specialized web-based services that will cut costs and provide specific and focused applications to users. The complexity of designing, installing, configuring, deploying, and supporting the system with internal resources can be eliminated with this type of methodology, providing great benefit to organizations. However, these models can present an authentication problem for corporations with a large number of external service providers. This paper describes the implementation of Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and its capabilities to provide secure single sign-on (SSO) solutions for externally hosted applications

The Geometry of the Gibbs-Appell Equations and Gauss' Principle of Least Constraint

We present a generalisation of the Gibbs-Appell equations which is valid for general Lagrangians. The general form of the Gibbs-Appell equations is shown to be valid in the case when constraints and external forces are present. In the case when the Lagrangian is the kinetic energy with respect to a Riemannian metric, the Gibbs function is shown to be related to the kinetic energy on the tangent bundle of the configuration manifold with respect to the Sasaki metric. We also make a connection with the Gibbs-Appell equations and Gauss' principle of least constraint in the general case

Is Understanding Reducible?

Despite playing an important role in epistemology, philosophy of science, and more recently in moral philosophy and aesthetics, the nature of understanding is still much contested. One attractive framework attempts to reduce understanding to other familiar epistemic states. This paper explores and develops a methodology for testing such reductionist theories before offering a counterexample to a recently defended variant on which understanding reduces to what an agent knows

Byggbranschen står inför flera utmaningar eftersom vår medvetenhet om omgivningen ökar och ett mer hållbart förhållningssätt önskas. Ett byggprojekt är traditionellt begränsat av tid, kostnad och kvalitet men det har blivit ett måste att fokusera på miljöaspekter också. Att fokusera på miljöaspekter är en av de stora utmaningar som projekterings- och projektledare står inför i dag. Detta är en utmaning eftersom hållbart byggande kan uppnås på många olika sätt och projektledare har inte djup kunskap inom området. Ny kunskap behövs om till exempel miljöklassificeringar och långsiktiga fördelar med hållbart byggande. För att stödja design -och projektledare i sitt dagliga arbete använder många företag verksamhetssystem som ett verktyg för att lagra och dela kunskap. Systemet ska säkerställa att alla arbetar på rätt sätt och levererar lämplig kvalitet, men systemet bör också stödja de anställda i deras arbete. Konsulter behöver kunna ge råd, stöd och kontrollera de miljömässiga aspekterna av projekten. För att göra detta behöver de omfattande miljöledningsstöd från sitt verksamhetssystem. Denna studie är kvalitativ där intervjuer har genomförts och en enkät skickats ut till WSP’s projektledningsavdelningen i Stockholm. Författaren har gått in i verksamhetssystemet och observerat och kartlagt innehållet för att kunna föreslå förbättringar. Syftet med denna forskning är att undersöka hur ett verksamhetssystem kan stödja projekt -och projekteringsledare inom hållbarhetsfrågor. Genom att göra detta förbättras kunskapshanteringen. Resultaten tyder på att ett verksamhetssystem och miljöstyrningen bör integreras i ett system. Systemet måste vara snabbt och innehålla en effektiv sökfunktion för att förbättra tillgängligheten. Det måste finnas lämpliga verktyg som checklistor, mallar och riktlinjer för att utföra miljöuppgifter. Dessutom behöver de anställda tillräckliga kunskaper om hållbarhet för att kunna använda verktygen och lyckas bedriva hållbar projektledning. Det bör också finnas ett återkopplingsverktyg för de anställda som uppmuntrar dem att komma in med förslag och synpunkter som bidrar till kunskapsdelning i företaget

A Symmetric Product for Vector Fields and its Geometric Meaning

We introduce the notion of geodesic invariance for distributions on manifolds with a linear connection. This is a natural weakening of the concept of a totally geodesic foliation to allow distributions which are not necessarily integrable. To test a distribution for geodesic invariance, we introduce a symmetric, vector field valued product on the set of vector fields on a manifold with a linear connection. This product serves the same purpose for geodesically invariant distributions as the Lie bracket serves for integrable distributions. The relationship of this product with connections in the bundle of linear frames is also discussed. As an application, we investigate geodesically invariant distributions associated with a left-invariant affine connection on a Lie group
